When it comes to the big boys of tow sports, MasterCraft is synonymous with incredible, high-end performance and the XStar is as good as it gets. It’s not cheap, but this isn’t a compromise either. This is a premium wakeboarding experience.
From the bow’s classic pickle-fork design back everything about this boat is wake-focused. The bow lounge has back and armrests facing forward for your rip out to your favourite riding locale, but the premium backrests are at the very front, curved for wake-facing spectators.
Under the portside console mid-ship, there is a massive storagearea with access from both bow and cockpit, large enough to fit a board and lots of extra gear.
The high-end helm setup features triple touchscreens surrounding the wheel, including a massive display front-and-centre that hides away in the dash when you’re not running. From these you can control everything from lights to music to ballast to cruise control.
There’s an option to select presets for wakes or customize foryou. There is the great wakeboard wake, the symmetrical V “ with a crisp lip to jump from side to side “ but there’s also the option to craft one-sided, steep surf wakes thanks to the Gen2 surf system.
The powerful 6.2-litre Ilmor MV8’s 430-horsepower provides the power to push the weighted boat through the water at a consistent speed, but also has the torque to pull riders out of the water and get that wake going very quickly.
The flip-back rear bench provides the right viewpoint for passengers and the spectator seat opposite the helm is a comfortable lounger for a day of riding. When you get thirsty on a hot summer’s day, a full-size cooler under the starboard side bench seating will keep you refreshed.
The XStar is designed as a competition boat, solely focused on high-end wakeboarding. Unless you spend a lot of time doing just that, you’re unlikely to get this as your everyday boat. Anyone serious about riding the wake would be hard pressed to top this MasterCraft.
